はじめてのケンブリッジ国際教育 ― 10のQ&A ―
先日芝国際中学校・高等学校がケンブリッジ国際教育認定校になったことをお伝えしましたが、この度「ケンブリッジ国際教育FAQ」（日・英）を作成しました。皆様のご理解にお役に立てばと思います。
Q1. ケンブリッジ国際教育とは何ですか？
ケンブリッジ国際教育は、イギリスの名門大学である University of Cambridge の試験機関、Cambridge Assessment International Education が提供する世界標準の教育プログラムです。世界160か国以上、10,000校を超える学校で導入されており、日本国内の文科省一条校でも複数の学校が採用しています。
Q2. 何を学ぶことが特徴ですか？
ほぼすべての主要教科が用意されていますが、最大の特徴は「学び方」にあります。
単なる知識の暗記ではなく、
- 批判的思考力（クリティカルシンキング）
- 問題解決力
- 自分の意見を論理的に表現する力
を育成することに重点が置かれています。
Q3. どのような仕組みになっていますか？
中学段階では「IGCSE」、高校段階では「A Level」という課程があります。科目ごとに授業を履修し、修了後にA Level試験を受験します。A Levelは、国際的に認められた大学入学資格です。受講者が全員このA Level試験を受ける必要はなく、本人の希望や志望する大学入学要項によります。
Q4. 芝国際ではどの科目で実施しますか？
中学と高校1年では社会・理科・数学・英語を全員が、高校2年からは進路などによって3〜4科目を選択し、専門的に深く学びます。但し、数学と英語は除く。
- 理科（生物・化学・物理）
- 社会（地理・歴史）
- 数学
- 英語
A Levelの内容は非常に高度で、大学初年度レベルに相当すると言われています。海外大学では、優れた成績を修めた場合、単位認定（授業免除）がなされることもあります。
Q5. 試験の評価はどのように行われますか？
A Level試験は、A（最高）からEまでのアルファベットで評価されます。
この資格は、University of Oxford や Harvard University をはじめ、世界中の大学で入学選考資料として活用されています。
Q6. 日本の一般的な中高一貫校との違いは何ですか？
日本の学習指導要領を大切にしながら、世界共通のカリキュラムも履修する点に特徴があります。芝国際では、日本の教育の強みと世界標準の教育の強みを融合させることができます。
Q7. 大学入試において有利になりますか？
A Levelの成績は、海外大学進学において高く評価されます。さらに近年では、日本国内の難関国公立・私立大学においても、総合型選抜や国際型コースの入試で評価対象となるケースが増えています。自分の在籍する学校がケンブリッジ国際教育認定校でないと受験資格が取れない学科もあります。
Q8. 学習負担は大きくなりますか？
芝国際では開校以来、ケンブリッジ教材を活用し、教科を深く掘り下げる学習を実践してきました。また、通常2年間で修了するA Level課程を、本校では3年間かけて丁寧に指導します。そのため、無理なく高度な内容に取り組むことが可能です。
Q9. 途中で進路変更は可能ですか？
本校では日本の学習指導要領に基づく教育も並行して行っているため、進路変更にも柔軟に対応できます。なお、途中からケンブリッジ国際コースへ変更する場合には、所定の試験を実施し、基準を満たした生徒のみ変更が可能となります。
Q10. 文系・理系はいつ決めますか？
A Levelでは、3〜4科目を選択して専門的に学びます。例えば、理科・数学を中心に選択すれば理系型、歴史・地理・英語などを中心に選択すれば文系型となります。しかし、文系・理系と決めることなく、文理を組み合わせて選択することも可能です。本校では十分なガイダンスを行い、慎重に選択できるよう支援します。
Your Gateway to the World: Cambridge International in 10 Questions
Q1. What is Cambridge International Education?
Cambridge International Education is a world-standard educational programme provided by Cambridge Assessment International Education, the international examinations body of the prestigious University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. It is implemented in more than 160 countries and over 10,000 schools worldwide. In Japan as well, several schools officially accredited under Article 1 of the School Education Act have adopted this programme.
Q2. What is distinctive about what students learn?
While almost all major academic subjects are offered, the most distinctive feature lies in how students learn. Rather than focusing solely on memorization of knowledge, the programme emphasizes the development of:
- Critical thinking skills
- Problem-solving abilities
- The ability to express one’s ideas logically and persuasively
Q3. How is the programme structured?
At the junior high school level, students study the IGCSE curriculum, and at the senior high school level, they follow the A Level curriculum. Students take individual subjects and, upon completion, sit for the A Level examinations. A Level is an internationally recognized university entrance qualification. Not all students are required to take the A Level examinations; this depends on each student’s aspirations and the admission requirements of their chosen universities.
Q4. Which subjects are offered at Shiba Kokusai?
In junior high school and Grade 10 (Senior High Year 1), all students study Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, and English. From Grade 11 onward, students select three to four subjects according to their academic interests and future plans (with Mathematics and English generally continuing as core subjects).
Subjects include:
- Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
- Social Studies (Geography, History)
- Mathematics
- English
A Level content is highly advanced and is often considered comparable to first-year university study. At overseas universities, students who achieve excellent results may receive university credit or course exemptions.
Q5. How are examinations evaluated?
A Level examinations are graded from A (highest) to E. This qualification is widely recognized by leading universities around the world, including University of Oxford and Harvard University, and is used as an important credential in university admissions.
Q6. How does this differ from a typical Japanese integrated secondary school?
While respecting Japan’s national curriculum guidelines, the programme also incorporates a globally standardized curriculum. At Shiba Kokusai, we integrate the strengths of Japanese education with the strengths of international standard education, providing students with a truly global academic foundation.
Q7. Does it provide an advantage in university admissions?
A Level results are highly valued for admission to overseas universities. In recent years, an increasing number of competitive national and private universities in Japan have also begun to consider A Level results in comprehensive admissions and international-track entrance examinations. In some cases, applicants must be enrolled in a Cambridge International accredited school in order to meet eligibility requirements for certain faculties.
Q8. Will the academic workload increase significantly?
Since its founding, Shiba Kokusai has utilized Cambridge materials to promote in-depth learning across subjects. While A Level is typically completed in two years, our school delivers the programme over three years, allowing students to study advanced content thoroughly and without undue pressure.
Q9. Is it possible to change academic pathways midway?
Because our school simultaneously follows Japan’s national curriculum guidelines, students can respond flexibly to changes in their academic plans. However, students wishing to transfer into the Cambridge International course after enrollment must sit for a designated examination, and only those who meet the required standards may transfer.
Q10. When do students decide between humanities and sciences?
In A Level, students select three to four subjects and study them in depth. For example, choosing primarily Mathematics and Sciences leads to a science-oriented pathway, while selecting History, Geography, and English leads to a humanities-oriented pathway.
However, students are not required to strictly separate humanities and sciences; interdisciplinary combinations are also possible. Our school provides thorough guidance to ensure that students make well-considered and informed choices.
