CEOS Youth Initiative – Second Webinar Update
CEOS Youth Initiative – Second Webinar Update
Following our previous feature on the CEOS Youth Initiative (Students Join the CEOS Youth Initiative – 芝国際中学校・高等学校), our students recently participated in the second international
webinar, which focused on monitoring water quality from space.
In this session, students explored how satellite data can be used to assess the health of
rivers, lakes, and oceans by analyzing parameters such as turbidity, temperature, and
algal blooms. They were introduced to how electromagnetic signals and spectral
signatures allow scientists to detect changes in water composition, pollution levels, and
ecosystem health across large regions.
The webinar also highlighted how satellite observations, combined with in-situ
measurements and AI-based modelling, can provide early warnings for environmental
risks such as harmful algal blooms, flooding impacts, and water contamination.
Our students are now applying these ideas in the next phase of the program by
designing scientific posters based on their own satellite monitoring concepts. This will
be followed by video poster presentations, which will be showcased at the CEOS Youth
Summit in Hobart, Australia in November 2026.
